Mounds, Skates, Magic, and Giving Thanks

What a fun week! We took a trip back in time at Cahokia Mounds State Park, went on two fun outings with the kiddos, and had an early Thanksgiving celebration. We move on to a new adventure this week, so make sure you comment with your guess for where we are headed.

The weather was warm and perfect on Monday, so we crossed the river to Illinois to visit Cahokia. It is the “largest prehistoric Indian site north of Mexico” and I’ve been wanting to visit for a few years. It was an impressive sight, especially the largest of the mounds: Monks’ Mound. We climbed to the top and it was impressive. They have an augmented reality app that Nathan downloaded and that allowed us to see what archaeologists think that the various parts of the complex looked like a thousand years ago. We enjoyed wandering around the park and learning about the Mississippian culture and settlements.

We got to do some fun things with the kids this week. They have a weekly outing with a local homeschool group and this week it was to an ice skating rink. Peter got to try the tiniest little ice skates I’ve ever seen, but after a few minutes on the ice, he wasn’t so sure about the whole thing. However, Teddy was all about it. He used the balance helper (kind of like a plastic walker) for most of the time. He grinned and giggled his way around the ice time and time again. Toward the end, he was even venturing to the outside of the walker and then set out holding Nathan’s hand. It was cute to see his confidence grow.

We also went with them to the children’s museum, The Magic House. They have a membership there, so they have been plenty of times and know what their favorite areas are. But we’ve been with them several times and there still seem to be activities that we haven’t done before. The day we spent there was cold, but they were happy to spend some time out in the garden in the hedge maze and sandbox. There is a climbing structure made to look like a beanstalk that goes from the basement up to the third floor and Teddy climbed the whole thing. Peter loved the fishing area. There is a pond with little fish-shaped fishing lures and fishing poles. The kids can pull out a fish, then run across the room and drop the fish into another pond. Then they can follow their fish along a glass-covered stream under their feet and see it return to the fishing pond. It was so pleasant to be there on a day that the museum was less crowded.

Another fun thing we did was to find some live music. Since St. Louis is a “blues town”, we thought we might try our luck at a place not far from our apartment. It was a great little family-run spot where we had a decent meal and heard a great blues band play. It was a cold and windy night, but it was a cozy place to enjoy some music.

We also spent time this weekend preparing and eating a Thanksgiving feast. Alex and I baked pies on Saturday (his apple pie turned out beautifully; my pecan pie…let’s just say that mistakes were made). Today, Hanna baked rolls and I made the potatoes, veggies, and steaks. We aren’t much into turkey. It was delicious and we are certainly thankful to be able to spend time with our family this year. While we were inside baking, Nathan was doing major autumn clean-up in the yard. He worked so hard and made it look so good!

We are down to our last few days in St. Louis for a while. On Thanksgiving we are hitting the road again. Leave your guess for where you think we will start our new road trip below! We wish you all a wonderful holiday!

Atlanta and A Day Out

Atlanta and A Day Out

This week started out with our final day of Atlanta. We also spent some fun days playing with the boys (lots of Lego!) and and little outing, too.
Last week I promised to share the details from our trip to Atlanta, so here we go:
Sightseeing
We didn’t have a lot of plans when we landed in Atlanta, but we had a few things in mind. We visited the area called Sweet Auburn where the Martin Luther King, Jr. historical sights are. The National Park Service has a really good vistor center there and the ranger “church talk” was really informative. I also mentioned last week that we went to church at Ebenezer Baptist. It was a really hopeful and uplifting service. The congregation was encouraged to reach out to neighbors and build community…great advice for us all.
We also visited Coca-Cola World. Nathan went there as a young buck, but he says that everything about it is different, including the location. They have lots of history info and different advertising through the century+ that Coke has been around. There’s a fun room where you can smell different ingredients and try to identify them. The Coco-Cola company owns something like 3500 different drink brands from around the world. There’s a room at the end of tour where you get to taste an assortment of things from around the world. It was fun and the Centennial Olympic Park was nice to walk around.
We also visited two museums. The Atlanta History Center is excellent and has some really cool displays like a steam locomotive and various Olympic torches. They also house one of only two cycloramas in the United States. The other is at Gettysburg. The one in Atlanta is a giant, circular painting of one moment in time from the Battle of Atlanta. It was really interesting to hear the crazy journey that the painting took and all the restoration that has taken place. There was also a really good film about Stone Mountain, which is just outside of Atlanta and has a giant carving of Confederate generals on it. The film explores the sticky subject of monuments and memorials and where they fit into history and what they mean to us as our attitudes about things inevitably change over generations. It was educational.
The other place we visited was the Jimmy Carter Presidentail Library. This is the fourth Presidential Library we have visited, the second just this year. We have yet to be disappointed by one of these sites. They do such a good job of giving you a history of the president and the time in which he served and the challenges of that time. I don’t know about you, but when I learn about moments in history, I don’t usually get much of a deep dive into each topic or event. These libraries do a really good job of going deep into the President’s triumphs, failures, and challenges. We walked away with a great respect for Jimmy Carter’s presidency as well as all the good he and his wife did after leaving office.
Entertainment
We went to two shows. We saw the 50th Anniversary tour of A Prairie Home Companion. Garrison Keillor and company sang and told stories and such for about 3 hours. It was a good show. The guy who does the sound effects, Fred Newman, is my favorite though. He’s hilarious. It’s been a while since we listened to the program, but going to the show brought back lots of good memories of listening with the kids on Saturday afternoons. That show also kept me company during my pregnancy with Alex when Nathan was working nights on the weekends and I was all alone.
We saw some comedy at a club called the Punchline. Alonzo Bodden was the headliner and he did a great show. On paper, he should not be the kind of comic that we are into, but he is just so down to earth and really funny.
One unexpected thing happened on Saturday morning. We could hear a bunch of kids outside. They were all in military uniforms and just kind of waiting around for something. As we walked out to go get on the metro, Nathan asked one of them what was happening and we learned that they were staging for the Veterans’ Day parade. As we walked along to the station, there were lots of cars and military vehicles ready for the parade, so that was kind of fun. Nathan loved the Corvettes.
Food
We had some really amazing food and some that was quite disappointing. We tried to embrace the fact that we were in the south, so we had chicken and waffles (that were really “croffles” or croissant/waffles) that was just ok. We had a sweet potato cheesecake that was truly yummy. Nathan had some delightful fish. One breakfast I had a delicious bowl of yogurt and granola and autumn-spiced apples and Nathan had really good eggs on mighty fine sourdough (oh how I miss baking sourdough). The biggest disappointments were the overpriced, mediocre dishes. Oh well…sometimes you get lucky. Actually, one of the best meals we had was here in our neighborhood in St. Louis on our way home from the airport. There’s a great little place just down the street that served us a mighty fine smash burger with a respectable salad and bowl of soup. Yum!
A Day Out with the Big Boys
We had great success getting to and from the airport here in St. Louis on public transportation. Since Teddy and Peter are so into trains and planes and things that go, we thought it would be fun to take them on a little adventure. We picked them up and stopped for some snacks, then we drove to the end of line for the light rail. We rode the train to another station and switched to the line that goes to the airport. We sat at the airport for a while and watched planes come and go while munching on pretzels and Pringles. Then we got back on the train and did the whole thing in reverse and stopped for pizza on our way home. It was a blast and just the thing for little boys. It’s really been a joy to be close by for a while.
One great thing about all the traveling that we have done this season is that we have had an extended autumn. We’ve been chasing it all over the country from the mountains of Utah in September to the hills of Ohio in October and now here in St. Louis in November. We have enjoyed the beautiful autumn colors all over the place. It’s been nice. Have a great week–do something nice for yourself and for someone else.

Off to Atlanta

The week started with everyone being sick and three days of rain. Now we are spending the long weekend knocking around Atlanta.

Nathan served his mission here in the early 90s, but he hasn’t returned to the city since going home. I’ve never left the Atlanta airport…just passed through. So it was high time we visited. The city has changed a lot since he was here, but it was a lot of fun to hear his memories as we toured around.

Since we are still traveling, I’ll save the details for next week. We love you all and wish you an outstanding week! ♥️

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween!

We have had another round of the dreaded head cold here this week. It’s one of the few anti-perks of hanging out with toddlers.

We enjoyed seeing Teddy participate in the Primary program last Sunday. He said his part beautifully. Arthur was blessed by his daddy in Sacrament meeting today. We’ve enjoyed playing with the Mueller boys, walking in St. Louis’s lovely parks, and eating some really good Italian food (in the Hill neighborhood) and tacos (on the Delmar Loop). We’ve also been trying to plan for the coming year and catching up on personal projects.

Anyway, since we are under the weather, I thought I would keep this extremely brief and wish you a happy November. Enjoy the photos of our grandkids with jack o’lanterns and dressed in their Halloween costumes. Ciao!

Two + Choo Choo

Two + Choo Choo

We had a great week! We made it back to St. Louis to celebrate Peter’s 2nd birthday, then we moved into our own place, and we had some fun outings!

Our drive back to St. Louis from West Virginia was blissfully uneventful. We made it back in time to go get some birthday pizza with our newest 2-year-old, Peter. He’s such a jolly little guy. He loves to play with Duplo blocks and his trains. He calls them “rains” and always says it with an exclamation point at the end. We gave him a big new bucket of Duplo and he also got to pick out a couple new engines (Percy and Toby) and new track for the train collection.

We packed up most of our stuff and moved to an AirBnB. It’s nice to still be close to Alex’s family, but good for all of us to be settled into a more regular routine. Our place is about a 15-minute drive from the city center in a neighborhood that was built in the 1930’s and 40’s. The area is close to businesses and parks, but is also surprisingly quiet. We are enjoying it a lot. We walked up to Tower Grove Park for the Farmer’s Market and reveled in the perfect autumn day.

We also got to take the boys on a special outing on Friday. We took them to get a bite of dinner, then we had tickets to the train store’s special play night. They each got to choose a new engine or car for their train set and then they played upstairs in the birthday party area for almost 2 solid hours. They had so much fun and they were so good about sharing the space with other kids and taking turns. It was really cute to watch them play and build.

We also took a drive just south of the city to Jefferson Barracks park for another autumn walk. There is also an Italian-American neighborhood called The Hill that we visited for an outstanding dinner one night. That’s about it for now. Hope you have a fantastic week!
