Just Chillin’

Just Chillin’

We’re still here in Florida, working on projects and getting in our daily walks and recommended daily doses of sunsets and healthy food.

We don’t do much that’s exciting from day to day. Nathan reads, studies languages, and practices the piano. I’ve made some crafts, worked on my website, and done plenty of drawing. We have the advantage of plenty of time for daily workouts and walks. The weather has been mostly cool, but there have been some swings up and down. It’s mostly been quite nice until today. We caught the southern end of the massive storm that’s swept across so much of the country. We had some serious rain–it was pretty exciting!

We’ve only had a few “events” while we’ve been here. About a week ago, we woke up to find that our refrigerator had died in the night. Nathan grabbed a couple of bags of ice to turn our non-functional freezer into an icebox and later that day a maintenance guy brought us a mini fridge. It wasn’t ideal, but it worked for a few days. We were surprised yesterday when a new fridge was delivered and we are happy to have a working freezer and regular-sized fridge again.

The other happenings this week were an outing and a show. One day we drove to the charming town of Seaside. They built it in the 80s to look like it is a lot older. It was also a filming location for The Truman Show. It’s very cute and walkable and we enjoyed our afternoon there. On Thursday, we went to see the local community theater production of Murder on the Orient Express. It was fun and they did a great job. It’s tough to have amateur actors tackling all the different European accents, but they mostly rose to the challenge.

We’ve had the chance to research and plan some new travel adventures for this year. We’ve also been able to nail down some of our schedule for the coming months, so that’s been nice. For the most part, things won’t be much different…some time for just us, some time with family and some time traveling. We have one more week here in Miramar Beach and then we set out for points north! Have a great week!

All is Quiet

All is Quiet

There’s not much going on from day to day here, so very little to report. I will be doing some website maintenance in the next couple of weeks, so there may or may not be posts for a bit. We will see how it goes. There was a request (thanks, Erin!) for book recommendations from 2025, so here goes…

I read fewer books this year (70-80 instead of 100+) due to the fact that we were on the move so much. As a result, my “Did Not Finish” list was much longer than usual. Here are some that I did finish and enjoyed:

Fiction

Series:

Although I have burned out on a lot of other series, I have still not tired of Craig Johnson’s Longmire books. There is something about that crusty old Wyoming sheriff that I really enjoy.

Also not a new recommendation, but the Irish Country Doctor  novels by Patrick Taylor. They are gentle and sweet and funny. The audiobooks are a real bonus for all the Irish accents.

They’re no secret, but Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club and sequels are winners. Subtle humor and great characters. I also recommend his other series, starting with We Solve Murders. Different characters, but just as entertaining.

The Searcher and The Hunter by Tana French. Also thrillers, set in Ireland.

I’ve been recording my own versions of the Little House books (Laura Ingalls Wilder) for the grandkids. I have been surprised at how interesting they still are.

Stand Alones:

Emily Henry’s Great Big Beautiful Life was a nice romance

Lucy Foley’s The Hunters has big Agatha Christie vibes

The Wedding People by Alison Espach was a good comedy of errors

Non-Fiction:

Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green. I just can’t recommend this one highly enough–we could wipe this disease out if people cared more about the poor.

Changeable by J. Stuart Ablon is absolutely awesome, especially for parents. The world could really benefit from his approach to collaborative problem solving. Other books that are great for parents: 10 to 25 by David Yeager, How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlis, and 1-2-3 Magic by Thomas W. Phelan.

The Art of Spending Money by Morgan Housel

Reading American history books is soothing for me because it reminds me that our country has always been tumultuous, a little kooky, and people have always been at odds. It helps to make the situations of today not feel quite so catastrophic. Although not a book, Ken Burns’ newest PBS documentary, The American Revolution is excellent and should be required viewing for all citizens.

David McCullough never goes out of style. The books this year were Truman (president, obviously), The Great Bridge (massive book about the building of the Brooklyn Bridge), and The American Spirit (a collection of some of McCullough’s essays and speeches). Nathan also read The Wright Brothers.

I also read Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow (another big one) and Nathan and I just finished The Aviator and the Showman by Laurie Gwen Shapiro about Amelia Earhart and her husband, publisher George Putnam.

Nathan also recommends the evergreen Atomic Habits by James Clear and I add that his weekly email newsletter is EXCELLENT.

She’s not for everyone, but I enjoyed the awkwardness that is an extra character in That’s a Great Question, I’d Love to Tell You by Elyse Meyers.

Chris Hayes examines why we can’t shut off our phones, but should, in The Siren’s Call

Bonus Podcast Recommendations

(most of these are probably repeats from previous lists, but this is what I’m listening to lately):

Dear Hank and John, No Such Thing as a Fish, Wild Card, Everything Everywhere Daily, No Stupid Questions, Life Kit, The Moth, Hard Fork, The Wirecutter Show, Cautionary Tales, Revisionist History, unPaused, Good Hang, The Happiness Lab, Hasan Minhaj Doesn’t Know, Home Cooking, How to Do Everything, and if you’re into Star Wars and want to see it from a whole new angle, The Daughters of Ferrix. Also, a very old program that still makes me laugh is Cabin Pressure (the episodes are destinations and go alphabetically, so definitely start with Abu Dhabi). To help me get to sleep when I’m on a plane or we are staying somewhere noisy: Get Sleepy and Sleepy History. They’re engaging enough to get you to shut off the ruminating part of your brain but boring enough to send you to dreamland.

Ok, that’s it! Cheers!

New Year on the Gulf

New Year on the Gulf

Happy New Year, y’all! We are settled into our January home: a little condo in Miramar Beach, Florida overlooking Choctawhatchee Bay. We had a quiet Christmas, a tumultuous trip to Miami, and a great visit with family on our way here.

Christmas on Tybee Island was great, but the surprise was how much we enjoyed Savannah. The downtown area is so charming with all the tree-lined streets, shady squares, and historic buildings. We enjoyed a walking tour through town as well as a couple of excellent meals, especially our lunch at Six Pence Pub. We took a beautiful walk on the beach on Christmas morning. Then we went to see a movie (this became a tradition when the kids were grown) and just took it easy.

We drove south the next day, thinking that we would stop in St. Augustine. We ended up just driving through, as parking was expensive. It was cool to see the oldest city in the United States. We were headed for Miami, so we had a long day of driving, but the weather was good and we made pretty good time. The disappointment came as we walked into our AirBnB.

We have stayed in all sorts of accommodations over the years, especially in the past decade, and we are pretty flexible about the wide range of quality. But this one definitely ranked in the bottom three. The worst one was a lady’s place in Seville, Spain when Nathan woke up and had been nibbled by bedbugs all night. The second worst was a place near Niagara that looked great in photos, but was in a really run-down building that had the smoke of decades of cigarettes permeating every inch–it felt like we were sleeping in an ashtray. This one in Miami was a similar situation: not what was advertised. The place was not clean, not well-stocked, and crawling with cockroaches. The smoke alarm was chirping for a new battery and all-around the whole thing was just a big bummer.

We based ourselves in Miami primarily so that we could visit the Florida Keys and the Everglades. Since the AirBnB was a drag and we wanted to visit Key West, we packed overnight bags and booked a cute motel room in Marathon on Knight Key for one night. That meant we didn’t have to be sad in our icky place and we had the leisure to enjoy the drive through the Keys. It did not disappoint. The motel was great and we ate delicious Cuban food and Key Lime Pie. We walked across part of the Seven-Mile Bridge for the sunset and walked through town on Key West. Success!

When we got back to Miami, we enjoyed some tacos downtown and a little walk along the river. We saw the biggest flock of birds we’ve ever experienced in a city. They were perched on every surface and swooping and murmurating all over the place.

The next day was our anniversary. We enjoyed riding the public transportation (relaxing, since Florida drivers are…ummm…crazy). Downtown was interesting, but for us the best part of Miami, without question, was Little Havana. We had a great walk down Calle Ocho, sampled some yummy Colombian empanadas, bought sweet things from Exquisito Chocolates, and read about some of the history. Then we capped the day with our traditional dinner at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse.

Since the AirBnB was not good, Nathan worked with the host to cancel our last two nights there and we moved to an airport hotel, which was such a relief. Then we took an airboat ride through the Everglades and saw a wildlife show with gators, toads, birds, and a BIG scorpion. Then it was north to Mulberry. We had a date the next morning with our nephew, Spencer, for a flying lesson. He’s a really good flight instructor and we both got to do a take-off, short flight, and a landing (assisted, of course) and it was fun. It was just as much fun to sit in the back of the little Cessna with Spencer’s little Jake and enjoy the scenery. We enjoyed having lunch with the whole family: Spencer, Noelle, and the three boys, Jesse, Jake, and James. We also got to go on a walk to see wildlife. It was a cold day, so we only got a little glimpse of a couple of alligators, but we saw lots of cool birds. Then we said adios and drove north for a stay near Gainesville. It was a very quiet New Year’s Eve for us as we had a quick bite to eat and turned in early.

We took the slow, scenic route along the coast to get to Miramar Beach. We stopped at Ichetucknee Springs State Park for a walk. There is a natural spring there and you can rent a tube or a kayak for a lazy float down the river–next time!

Our place here is not our typical choice for accommodations, but we are liking it so far. It is in a resort area, surrounded by golf courses and hotels. But we have a great view of the bay. So far, we have had a spectacular sunset, a violent thunderstorm, and a lovely double rainbow. We are settled in for some routine life for this month and it feels good to stop moving after a very busy November and December.

West Virginia and Points South

West Virginia and Points South

Hello and Merry Christmas! We have had a full week of the fun and excitement that we like about our nomadic life. Not all perfect, but good!

The week started in Ohio/West Virginia with cold and snow. We enjoyed some sledding with the kids, even though it was crazy cold. We had fun making all the Mueller family Christmas cookies: Nussstängeli (buttery, hazelnutty sticks–made those with Alex’s boys), Mailänderli (buttery, mildly lemony cookies cut with cookie cutters), Basler Läckerli (dense, nutty, citrusy, honey cookie from Basel), and our family’s favorite gingerbread cookies (spicy and super chewy). I finished up the last of the projects for Christmas gifts and it was fun to see the kids enjoy their toys. We also got to meet our newest family member, great-nephew Finn. After lots of snuggles and hugs and good food, it was time for us to leave and let everyone settle back into a normal schedule before the holiday shakes things up again.

We drove through a very rainy and foggy West Virginia afternoon to a stop for the night near Charlotte. We were sad to not be able to stop at New River Gorge National Park, but we will catch it next time. The weather cleared out the next morning (maybe it was nature’s birthday gift to Nathan) and we have had delightful weather since. We are spending a long weekend in Charleston, South Carolina. We’ve been talking about this trip for years, so it’s great that we are finally here. The city truly lives up to the hype and is especially charming with all the Christmas lights and wreaths and decorations all over the historic buildings. This is my 48th state visited in my lifetime–just North Dakota and Alaska left! It’s also crazy that in the last month we have gone from Morro Bay, CA on the Pacific coast, across the country to Utah, Missouri, Ohio, and West Virginia, and on to Charleston on the Atlantic–sea to shining sea!

We spent Nathan Day driving and we stopped at Congaree National Park for a walk through the swamp on the boardwalk. Then we went out for a very delicious birthday dinner at Edison on James Island. We followed that up with an improv comedy show (one of the best we’ve ever seen) at Theatre 99. The next day, we did an excellent walking tour of the Historic District of Charleston, had an afternoon snack at Harken Cafe, and stuffed ourselves at Hyman Seafood. Sacrament Meeting and a Christmas carol sing-a-long at the Huguenot Church were both good for getting in the right spirit. We also had some pretty decent BBQ at Home Team.

We took the ferry out to Fort Sumter to see the National Monument there. I sometimes hate that so much history focuses on war. However, it was really interesting to see the fort in the context of the landscape around it and to learn more about the other things that happened there before and after the start of the Civil War. A bonus was that we saw dolphins and a burrowing owl!

It’s been a great week and a wonderful Holiday season. We feel so blessed to be able to visit our kids and grandkids, despite the fact that they are scattered across the country. Some might think it’s sad that we don’t have a big gathering every year with everyone together, but this works great for us right now and we cherish our time together. We also feel so blessed that we have lots of other wonderful family and friends who love us and care where we are and that we are well. We love our people! This week we’re going to drive down the coast to Tybee Island near Savannah and we will spend a quiet, cozy Christmas there. I’ll sign off for a couple of weeks and when I check back in the New Year, we will be in Florida! Nathan and I wish you all a wonderful Christmas full of love and warmth and the very best for the New Year!

Having a Ball!

Having a Ball!

Just a quick check in, since I missed last week. We are having an absolute blast visiting kids and grandkids.

We spent just over a week in Missouri visiting Alex, Hanna, and their boys. We played outside, we made cookies, we went to see the Christmas lights at the botanical garden, and we built lots of marble runs, train tracks, and Lego creations. Now we are staying in Marietta, Ohio so we are in close proximity to Lauren, Bo, and their kids. We’ve been enjoying playing in the snow, hikes up the hill, reading stories, and baking Christmas goodies.

I’ve been working like mad to sew some special quilts and bedding for all the “big” kids. We also took the kiddos to pick out fabric and they each helped sew their very own pillowcase for a new pillow. Presents from Grandpa and Grandma came early this year so that we can enjoy seeing their excitement. Grandpa did a great job of wrapping the gifts. One present that will have to wait for better weather is a new play structure at Alex’s house.

We’ve also had some down times. Hanna and the boys were all sick and Nathan came down with something too and has had some rough days. Everyone is on the mend now. We’re also in the thick of the super cold weather in the east right now and we had a good bit of snow last night. The roads were a bit slick and the cold temps weren’t a help in melting anything, but nothing bad enough to keep us away from the kids. We’re here for several more days and we have plenty more fun planned. Have a good one!
